A Welcome Message from the Dean

Dr. Kevin Sneed, PharmD

The Future Begins Now!

I am very pleased to be the Founding Dean for the University of South Florida School of Pharmacy. As a practicing academic clinical pharmacist, I have personally experienced the profound impact that a pharmacist can make as part of a dedicated healthcare team that is focused on improving the health outcomes of patients. Drawing upon a naturally collaborative spirit, I have always sought to contribute in a meaningful manner to all of the health disciplines with regards to clinical impact, educational endeavors, and research accomplishment. With this experience as a foundation, we will now seek to create a USF School of Pharmacy with a mission of creating the pharmacists of the future, not simply meeting the standards of pharmacy education that currently exists today. It is now widely anticipated and expected by USF faculty that the colleges at USF and USF Health will benefit from the addition of our program. Pharmacy as a discipline and as a profession co-exists extremely well with all other health professions disciplines; the USF School of Pharmacy will enhance the educational, research, clinical, and technological endeavors for the USF Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Physical Therapy, and Biomedical Sciences. Future students will greatly benefit from the collective knowledge of USF Health, and will become outstanding pharmacist clinicians of the future. Together, we will continue on our quest to transform the healthcare system for the betterment of society.

The profession of pharmacy is currently interconnected with all aspects of healthcare throughout the nation. In recent years, nearly all health-related educational associations have called for an interprofessional approach to healthcare. The role of the pharmacist is currently changing, and many are being called upon to assist all other healthcare providers with medication therapy management of chronic disease states. There is virtually no aspect of healthcare that will not involve advanced pharmacotherapeutic interventions. While the commonly recognized traditional roles of pharmacists will continue to be essential for the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients, the pharmacists of the future will need to adapt to new methods of pharmaceutical care delivery that are not yet apparent, and participate as members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The creation of the University of South Florida School of Pharmacy at USF Health will seek to create new technologies and research innovations for the purpose of implementing new standards in the delivery of patient-centered pharmaceutical care throughout the healthcare system. The USF School of Pharmacy will create pharmacists to serve all of these needs.
As the healthcare needs of Floridians, the nation, and the world continue to grow, the escalating demands on the healthcare system will require increasing participation of pharmacists to assist healthcare teams and health-systems provisions. With special clinical emphasis placed upon caring for elderly populations, individualized medicine, emerging health information technologies, and building future healthcare leaders, the USF School of Pharmacy is excited to move the pharmacy profession towards the year 2015 and beyond. If I were an aspiring student, I would want to be a student in this program. The future begins now!! I look forward to our future students, faculties, and partners as we transform the DNA of healthcare!
